Its McIlroy v Scott - Round 1, but great rivalries are hard to find in golf

A few weeks ago we blogged about how the Australian Open would be a straight fight between Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy. With McIlroy improving as each tournament passes we felt sure he was ready to flex his trophy-lifting muscles soon. Adam Scott was looking every bit the next pretender to Tiger Woods's position as number one, winning three titles in the bounce in his green jacket homecoming tour. The resulting match up was everything it promised to be.

Rory McIlroy's Race To 2014

While the golfing world ran out of superlatives to describe the last five months of Henrik Stenson's record breaking season, I felt a different disturbance in the golf-time continuum. Stenson may well have just clinched the Race to Dubai title, adding to his FedEx Cup Series win in September, but Rory McIlroy's final round performance might just be preparing us all for a big year in 2014.
